
- Geographical Feature: it was once an island during the melting of glaciers. It is distinct from the nearby, famously mysterious small hillocks of Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve, which are fields of much smaller, earthen piles.
- Historical Significance: The area around the mound has a rich history. It was an early Native American meeting place, the site of an 1853 homesite for the Durgin family, and later a school and post office.
- Views and Access: The monument is at the base of the south side of the mound located at the fork of Old Highway 9 and James Road (near 7224 James Road SW). The monument is on private property, so visitors are cautioned not to block driveways.
- Community Naming: The town of Grand Mound was settled in 1851 and named for this specific hill.
